Owen and Darren

owen and darren

Owen and Darren have been singing together as a duo for over 16 years, and have been performing solidly for that time. Both of us are originally from Kent, Owen from Bromley and Darren from Dartford, we didn't know each other before that and it seems strange now that we end up as a duo in Dorset! We cover a range of music from the 50’s right through to the modern day, although the older songs seems to be more popular! “Good popular music rescued from the depths of time!” as someone once said to us!

We provide an awesome Ska and 80s set that everyone enjoys and which tends to bring back all the memories of those years gone by. Covering tunes by Madness, Bad Manners, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, and many many more this is sure to have you on the dance floor reliving your youth, just remember though, we're not as young as we used to be.

Bill Shannon’s Marnhull Soul Revue

Soul review

Bill Shannon’s MARNHULL SOUL Revue will be coming to Marnhull’s British Legion on that night in a fund-raising effort to help get the venue back on its feet again. £2.00 for non members

Bring along your Dancing Shoes for this one!  Northern Soul and Motown classics presented on original vinyl by DJ Bill Shannon in this fundraising event.

Banish the lockdown blues to history with an evening of uplifting and feel-good music, all in aid of the Club and local charities’.

As Bill explains ‘The Legion, like most venues, has suffered terribly over the past year and they have kindly donated the place to us for free that night. All proceeds will be going to the venue to help secure its future.

Bill is a stalwart of the Soul scene, having caught the bug when growing up in Manchester in the sixties. He was a regular at the city’s ‘Twisted Wheel’ Club, considered to be the ‘cradle’ of Northern Soul, and then later at the now legendary Wigan Casino All-Nighters. He’s since gone on to be a music entrepreneur, running his own Distribution business, Record Label, Online Sales platform called simply ‘Tunes’ as well as Djing at Weekenders, and Soul events up and down the country.

He also hosted his own radio shows during the nineties and noughties.

Bill will be playing music exclusively on good old vinyl, mainly 45s. He continues: ‘The music is so joyous and uplifting, it’s impossible not to feel exhilarated when you hear it. We want the good people of Marnhull and Sturminster Newton to come out and have a great time. There’s no need for anyone to feel inhibited. If you’ve never been to a Soul night before I guarantee you’ll recognise many of the tunes and probably love the ones you don’t!’

Bud Martin - Musician

rip it up

In 1969 Chris Britton (lead guitarist with The Troggs) took me to meet the legendary music publisher Dick James at his DJM Recording Studios in London. After singing one of my songs to him I was awarded a recording contract. However, Mr James insisted Now, in 2019, fifty years after the event I have re-recorded that audition piece - called 'Familiar Places'. Could this have been a hit record at the time? Who knows.
